Guide to Diamond Shapes for Engagement Rings
Many people confuse diamond shape with diamond cut. Although related, they are quite different. Shape describes the basic outline of the diamond. The most popular diamond shapes include round, cushion and oval. Cut or cutting style, on the other hand, refers to how a diamond’s facets are arranged. For example, most diamonds are brilliant cut. The quality of a diamond’s cut is based on its symmetry, polish and overall quality of craftsmanship. Learn more about diamond shapes

The 4C's of Diamond Quality
In 1940 the founder of GIA, coined the term 4Cs; referencing the four factors that characterize a faceted diamond: color, clarity, cut and carat weight. The concept was simple, but revolutionary.
Today, the 4Cs of Diamond Quality is the universal method for assessing the quality of any diamond, anywhere in the world. As the creator of the Diamond 4Cs and the International Diamond Grading System, GIA is trusted by consumers all over the world to grade nature’s finest treasures.
4 C's Cut
Cut is one of the most important of the 4Cs. Achieving the best cut for a diamond reflects in the stone’s final beauty and value. And of all the diamond 4Cs, it is the most complex and technically difficult to analyze. Learn more about diamond cut.
4Cs-CARAT
Carat weight relates to the size of a diamond, which is one of the most visible things about a stone. How large a stone looks, though, also depends on how it is cut. Stones that are cut too deep may weigh more, but they will not look any bigger face-up. That is one of the reasons why it is important to buy a stone that is well cut. Learn more about carat
4Cs-COLOR
What many people call “white diamonds” are actually colorless diamonds. These diamonds are graded on GIA’s D-Z color grading scale, with D being completely colorless. The more colorless a diamond is, the rarer and more valuable it is. D-F diamonds are considered colorless while G-J diamonds are near-colorless. Learn more about diamond color.
4Cs-CLARITY
Diamonds almost always contain inclusions, such as tiny crystals or feathers, and blemishes, such as nicks or scratches. Clarity considers the number, size, location, color or relief and type of these inclusions and blemishes (called clarity characteristics). The less noticeable they are, the rarer and more valuable the diamond is. Diamonds that are Flawless have no visible inclusions or blemishes at 10× magnification. Learn more about diamond clarity.
The World’s Foremost Authority on Diamonds
GIA has been the world’s most trusted name in diamond grading and gemstone identification since 1931. With objectivity and independence as its hallmark, GIA is recognized as the leader in gemological research,
education and impartial gem reporting services. GIA sets the standard for determining the qualities of

The future of GIA Diamond Reports going digital
The GIA Diamond & Stone Grading Report
A laser inscription serves as a secure identifying feature, which links the diamond to its specific report data, via a report number that GIA inscribes on the diamond’s girdle. Viewable under 10× magnification with a simple jeweler’s loupe, the inscribed report number can be matched to the diamond’s physical report or entered into GIA Report Check, GIA’s online database containing the diamond’s grading details.
